Grammy & Granddad Day 1 - Capers Island and Island of Palms

We couldn't wait for Grammy and Granddad to come. It seemed like it took forever for them to get here. They wanted to go to the beach, but we were worried it would be too cold. I decided a good compromise would be to take an adventure to Capers Island. It's an amazing place.

We left in the wee hours of the morning in order to make it to Capers Island on time. That also meant we missed most of the traffic.

Everyone thought I was crazy, but after running into an accident and stopping for a couple of potty breaks, we made it with just 15 minutes to spare.
Capers Island is a fascinating place. Baylie went there on a 5th Grade field trip and it was the best field trip I ever went on.

We got on our boat for our 30 minute ride to the island. The ride there is half the fun.
The guides stop and pull up crab traps. This one is  a blue crab. I wish I had taken a picture that showed the blue on the claws.
There were lots of beautiful birds.
Some sunken ships. Apparently people just abandon boats there sometimes.
We even saw dolphins!
Our crew.
Our guide was fantastic. He used to be a school teacher.
He showed us a stone crab. They have claws that can crush or cut off fingers!
We passed a tower that was used to look for U-boats during WWII. These were built all along the coast after a U-boat was captured off the coast of North Carolina.
I've always been fascinated by birds on pilings.
Once we got to Capers Island, one of the first things we saw was jellyfish. There were a few of them on the beach.
The beach was beautiful.
It's hard to describe what Capers Island looks like. It's one of those things you can explain or show pictures of, but you really have to experience it to appreciate it. It's completely undeveloped and much effort is made to keep it natural and untouched. You are only allowed to take one shell with you when you leave. It's like something out of a dystopian film.
Look at this amazing place.
These are some of the shells we found. We chose one each.
We spent about an hour and a half on the beach before heading back to Isle of Palms. This place fascinated me.
So cool to live on the water (until there's a hurricane...).
We decided to get in some beach and swimming time so we went to our favorite public beach at Isle of Palms. It was crowded! People still kept social distance from other groups.
The water was FREEZING! But some people were still brave. I was not one of them.
Dad and I are looking good! Between the two of us, we've lost 165 pounds!
Soaking up the sun!
Having a snooze.
I love my new hat!
Fun in the sun.
We ate dinner at a Mexican place. They served water in these cool jugs.
Everyone had a great day and were wiped out!
