I Made a Nudred!

I love learning about how to care for my kids' hair. We've decided to let Jalen's hair grow out. We wanted to do it in twists and I've always wanted to try out Nudred. However, I didn't want to pay the $29.99 plus shipping price. So after looking at some demos and at the tool itself, I decided to try and make my own.

I went to Wal Mart and bought a big sponge for $1.67 in the automotive department. Then I cut small holes out of it with an exacto blade. I tried to keep the holes the same size and used my fingers to even them out.
I put curling custard on Jalen's hair. When I first tried the sponge, I pushed too hard. David took over and did it with a much lighter touch and it worked better to make the curls.
We did it quickly because we were on our way out the door and were shocked at how fast and easy it was.
Rear view for Jen.
We love the finished look! Plus we saved ourselves $28.32, not including shipping!

His hair is getting long! I just had Liam's cut, but I love the nudred look. Will you post a picture of the back of his head so I can see how it works with his longer hair?

I think I'm going to try to make one too. Any pointers? Also, I'm not sure what kind of product to buy to put in--I know you have lots more access to hair stuff there, but what exactly do you use? Oh, and do you brush his hair out before you do it? do you brush it out every night too?
Thanks!

Hey Jen! I used a small exacto blade and cut little circles. It was kind of tricky, but using my fingers to even it out afterwards worked fine. I often put my fingers back in the holes to redefine them. the holes are almost as deep as my second knuckle. I don't do a lot with Jalen's hair. It doesn't knot up the way Baylie's does. I don't brush it out every day, but I do brush it before I use the nudred. I use the Tangle Teezer brush. It's awesome and I got my last one at Sally's. What I've been doing with both my kids is washing their hair with conditioner - completely skipping shampoo. I use Aussie 3-Minute Miracle. With coupons, I can get it for $1 and it works great. Then I use Kinky Kurly Knot Today that I buy at Target. (Wendy says you can get it at Target in Utah County too.)I use it on Baylie a lot, but only on Jalen when I'm brushing out his hair. On Jalen I also use Kinky Kurly Curling Custard when I'm going to do the dreds, but I don't think it's necessary. It does help define and hold the style, but it's pretty expensive. When you're actually forming the dreds, make small circles with the sponge and don't push too hard. If you make big circles, the dreds will be bigger. The other thing I've been doing with both my kids is spraying their heads with a mixture of distilled water and coconut oil. I've loved the Chocolate Hair Vanilla Care blog. I've learned so much from her. Good luck. I'm excited to see how it works out!
