Road Trip Days 5 & 6 - Niagara Falls

My mom and I went to the temple together on Friday morning and then we all headed to Niagara Falls. I strongly recommend that you plan on being with your parents while they are spending your inheritance. My parents decided to splurge for their 52nd wedding anniversary and so they got a room at the top of the Embassy Suites, overlooking Niagara Falls on the Canadian side, which has a much better view. We thought we were getting a room that had two queens and a pull out bed, but we ended up with a suite with six queens and two bathrooms!!

Room #2
View of the falls from our room.
Enjoying the view.
We were on the 34th floor.
We purchased a 24-hour bus pass to get around. The kids loved the fact that the buses bent in the middle and they were surprised to learn that I used to ride a bus like this to work every day in Houston.
We took a trip to the falls on the Hornblower. Baylie had a little trouble with her poncho.
Ready for the falls!
Grammy and Grandad were up top and we were down below. It seemed more crowded up top.
It was nice and clear so we had great views.
Rainbow through the falls.
 American Falls.
Other end of the rainbow.
American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.
My lens was getting wet.
Horseshoe Falls
The mist was getting thick!
Queen of the Water
Close to the falls.
Passing the Maid of the Mist.
 My cute parents.
While we waited for the bus, we were surprised to see black squirrels.
Jalen was very excited to pick up a hat as a souveneir courtesy of Grammy & Grandad.
We didn't get back to the hotel until almost 10:00 p.m. They light up the falls at night. There was supposed to be a fireworks show, but it was too windy so it got cancelled. Bummer because the view from our room would have been amazing.
Dinner with a view.
Our hotel.
The next morning (Saturday), we decided to take the incline ride down to the falls. It left right outside our hotel and went right down to the falls. We wished we had used it the night before!
Front row seats.
The incline with our hotel at the top.
View of the falls at ground level.
Cool building near the top of the falls. No idea what it is, but it's impressive.
This is one of those times where I take a million pictures and later look at them and realize so many of them look the same. But I couldn't help myself. It was so amazing!
The mist was so much heavier today that I was really glad we had arrived the day before and been able to see the falls better.
We walked along the river for a bit.
Shopped a bit (Bayle and my dad are major shoppers).
Next we decided to take a trip down to see the back side of the falls.
Not much to see, but still cool to do.
The best part was that there was a lookout deck where we could see the water even closer up.
Another interesting building that I have no idea what it is.
The old tunnel that was deemed unsafe because it was only 5 1/2 feet away from the outside. The new tunnel is 60 feet away.
When we got read to ride the incline back up, we saw this little muskrat by the tracks.
More photo ops.
Random notes...

  • David forgot his passport! But he called border patrol and they let him in with a copy of his birth certificate and passport as well as his driver's license. We didn't know if they would.
  • David and I were actually here 16 years ago for our honeymoon. It seemed like it had changed a bit since then.
  • The Canadian side is like Las Vegas - tons of neon, all kinds of things to do and in my opinion over commercialized. But in contrast, on the U.S. side, the city is falling apart. It's kind of sad.
  • Getting through immigration in both directions is a VERRRRY slow process.

It was an amazing 24 hours.

When we got back to Palmyra, we went downtown for dinner. When Joseph Smith lived here, there was a lot of discussion about religion. These four churches on four corners reminds me of that.
I
The Book of Mormon was originally printed in Palmyra at Grandin's Printing Press. You can now tour this building to see how the book was printed back then. It was a huge undertaking at the time.
Next stop was dinner. The burgers at this place were huge. David's was a  half pounder.
The rest of us got kids' meals, which were huge and came with fries, drink and ice cream. I wish I had taken a picture of the ice cream because a kiddie cone was two huge scoops and a small was four!
Our last stop of the day was the Liberty Bed & Breakfast where David and I spent our honeymoon. It was blue when we stayed there.

The trip continues to be amazing. I'm hoping that tomorrow can be a little more low-key and relaxing because we're all pretty tired.
