I'm always trying to find new things for our family to do. Since I'm a history lover, the whole family usually ends up doing something that I think will be fun. Sometimes it's not so much fun for the kids who would probably rather just swim.
This time we did something that was awesome (okay, I thought it was awesome). We went to Brattonsville, SC, a historic town where on one side of the street it's set up like the 1700's and on the other side like the 1800's. Most of the buildings are original although some have been moved from nearby locations to this spot. Many stand right where they always have. Some of the scenes from Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" were filmed here. (The home below, which is original to the site, was used in the movie.)
In July, they do a Revolutionary War reinactment and in October, they do one for the Civil War. I really hope to catch one of these.
Loved these split rail fences
Original settler's cabin
Baylie learns how to card wool and watches the ladies spin it
We got a little school lesson - Baylie and Jalen got to write on a real slate
Weaving
After the historic visit, we went a few miles down the road to a new children's museum (only $5!). Baylie informed me "This was a much better idea to come here." It was geared to preschoolers - perfect for us. (It was located right next to the site of the first Civil Rights sit in that resulted in actual jail time - perfect for me).
Trains
Rapunzel, Mother Gothel and Flynn Ryder
