Illuminating Luminaries

My granny got us started on luminaries. I'm not sure how or when, I just know that we've been doing them for almost as long as I can remember. My dad would spend a lot of time getting the sacks ready and then as kids we'd help fill them with sand, add a candle and set them along the driveway. We were usually doing it in freezing cold weather, often in snow.

We haven't done luminaries since moving to South Carolina, but we decided to do it this year. My dad had rolled about 100 bags while my parents were still in North Carolina and he left them, along with a ton of candles, with us.

Normally we light them for Christmas Eve and then again on New Year's Eve. This year it was so rainy, that we couldn't do them until the 26th. It was much easier preparing the bags in nice weather rather than in snow.

Unfortunately, we awoke to another rainstorm, so this year's luminary run was short lived.
And also our daddy ran over some of the bags.
