I have lived in Utah most of my life, but I have never been to Antelope Island. On this trip, I decided since we had our own car, we were definitely going. (There are a couple additional spots I plan to hit this trip.) Antelope Island was awesome.
On the island is a ranch that was in operation for 133 years. I found it fascinating.Old farm equipment
Hitching post
Blacksmith shop
Loved the rock wall
Buffalo hide
Hay scale
Sheep camp trailer (I remember these from my childhood.)
The sheep shearing operation was impressive.
Horse barn
The ranch is right on the Great Salt Lake.
Flour bins - we had one of these when I was a kid. I grew up in an adobe brick house with bricks that were hand made by the man we bought the house from.
Root cellarsThis view reminds me of the ranch in Colorado.
This ranch is right on the Great Salt Lake.
We saw lots of buffalo. It was awesome.
Views of The Great Salt Lake
We could see a fire in the mountains. I think it was started by fireworks.
We saw pronghorn deer and mule deer.
We stopped for some buffalo burgers which Jalen loved.
The walk to the lake was a short hike.Wild grasses
Walking across the barren land.
I remember hearing stories of how the salinity in the Great Salt Lake was so high you could sit and float, but I'd never experienced it before. It was so cool! It is 10 times saltier than the ocean. We licked a finger just to get an idea and it was sooooo salty it was unbearable.
The water looks dirty, but it's actually completely clear. What you actually see is the sandy bottom. It is so salty that fish cannot live in it. Only some brine shrimp and algae survive.
The gnats on the shoreline were thicker than I've ever seen in my life. All the black you see is gnats.
Final views
It was a fantastic day and I'm so glad we took this little adventure.
